The Beauty of Choosing Happiness

There are so many things in life that can make us happy and so many things that can make us

unhappy. This is human nature and our natural response to our fluctuating environment. When situations work out the way we want them to we feel happy. When get what what we desire we feel happy. When we accomplish what we want we feel happy.

As we all know things don’t always work out the way we want them to or in the time frame we want them to. In these moments the it is best to surrender and turn to “choosing happiness”.

What does this mean?

Surrendering is not giving up on anything; it is releasing our painful emotions that can range from anywhere between disappointment, anger, frustration, despair, fear and probably the hardest to release would be grief.

When dealing with disappointment, anger, frustration, despair, fear or any other uncomfortable feeling the first step to releasing it is acknowledging the emotion. Once you realize what you are feeling you are able to comfort yourself appropriately and you are able to let the feeling go.

Sometimes releasing the emotion happens naturally upon acknowledging it, sometimes it doesn’t and then accepting its presence and allowing it to be as you shift your focus from what was causing the emotion to something else is enough, journaling techniques can help, and there are several emotional/mental/energetic therapies available to help with this process as well.

It may seem foreign or simplistic but changing your perspective and focus is where the beauty of “choosing happiness” is able to flow into your experience. “Choosing happiness” is in the now; the present moment where you focus your attention on all that does feel good even if that is a bit of sunshine, a refreshing rain, or even just the breath flowing into your body. In choosing to appreciate all that is you begin to take responsibility for your own happiness rather than unconsciously reacting to situations in life. The more you are able to do this the more free you become and the more joy you will feel.

In regards to grief, it is important to be loving and patient with yourself as grief is a process. When our loved ones and pets pass on we may have no desire to feel happiness and it can even feel impossible for a while. But if we ask ourselves what they would want for us we know they would want us to be well and happy. Sometimes the best way we can honor our passed on loved ones is to choose to live our lives to the fullest- doing our best just one day at a time.
